Whistle While You Work

I'm not a huge potato person, although I like the firm turned soft when cooked fleshy creations. But lately, I'm on a jag. Potatoes, potatoes, potatoes. I bake them, slice them, then bake them again with a touch of butter until they're brown and crisp. Slathered with ketchup they've been doing the trick. Potatoes are so Taurus. I've been thinking maybe I should keep it up despite the dire warnings about elevated blood sugar with this type of carbohydrate. My blood sugar is just fine.
Today the Sun moved into Sagittarius to begin the wonderful party month before Christmas. Out of Scorpio and off my South Node, oh merciful heaven, and dreams of Taurus have returned. Added to this earthy moment is the lovely Jupiter in Capricorn trine Saturn in Virgo which is now exact for several days. I never underestimate trines, although ease is sometimes maligned in this world. Not in my book. Grab what's good while you can.
So just on cue, our esteemed, also sometimes maligned, soon to be chief executive gave his weekly youtube discussion on the subject of economics. To the rescue! The Economic Recovery Plan is on the table. Of course, doubts are expected. I certainly have some, with theft, corruption, murder, and exponential greed a continuing part of the human condition. Wall Street is uppity and Main Street is still waiting. Hope and promise are hope and promise. But considering the sneaky introduction of good aspects here and there, and the experience of living, solutions to puzzles come and go, especially with mentally acute Virgo around. So we'll see. Job creation is truly the puzzle piece that's needed, while the gods of ruin are nourished too.
Even though I have a raging Gemini/Sadge opposition and I'm what's considered a "people person", the pantheon of cabinet stars lining up does not excite me. My age-old boredom with politicians is settling in once again. I wish they looked and sounded better at least. But I am interested in improving the nation if possible. So let the ducks line up and hopefully with Jupiter trine Saturn some of them will align with the cosmos and think about joining with That/The One and start to tackle our economic problems, lest I say failures. One thing leads to another. It's often a matter of contrasts. But trines are a matter of harmony.
Potatoes are also Saturn influenced and just as these tubers look like solid growth and nourishment to me, I imagine some of us will be surviving on the earth plane no matter what. Taurus rising trine Pluto in Capricorn in the inaugural chart could mean more spuds for dinner, although without the expensive trimmings.

Well this Taurus ate potatoes every day of her life until she was 16 and ran away from home!

I gave them up for years and have been back on them for about a year now.
Tonight I'm going to roast some and dish them up with my homemade chicken broth that has been simmering for 2 days. :)

Yeah, the political line is starting to resemble the old Clinton administration. Same old faces.

:-)

I for one would love to have back that luxury of being bored with politics... Having to actually fight to keep the country afloat and change the leadership is not really my cup of tea but we do what we must sometimes, eh? I'm still in it, gotta see this through for a while.

Joe, after the return of the Clinton shit last week I thought I'd tune it out and go back to not voting. I didn't sign up for more National Enquirer politics. I'm weary of nursing these people through their damaged dramas. They're awful. Just hideous. What money buys. And what suckers we are.

I'm surprised to hear you say that mpk. I thought you were out of the political loop. Maybe it's best to see it through, but these people are really annoying. They need some new writers. Silly me for buying a ticket to the new show expecting Thespian level theater.

But really, I'm trying to adjust. I don't like the free trade war profiteering crowd and it looks like the exact same foreign policy will continue. Obama mixed with them has lost his appeal to me. He's lost his shimmer and power. I knew this would happen so I grieve not. It was exceptionally joyous while it lasted.
I don't need that much to live and I'm against murder for profit myself. I won't vote for it. Apparently people want to die. If it continues as is I will go back to denying them my vote. The Clinton policies are a large part of why we're in trouble now. The Deregulation King. But he's weak and an especially acquiescent pawn himself.

They're embroiled in some bad stuff in South America and Obama said he was against CAFTA, but that's heavy Clinton fun and games so I expect him to give in. He looks like a typical pawn like the rest of them but we're all victims of our own selves. It's actually a relief to be free of expectation. I can relax. My enthusiasm will easily reroute. Maybe even be profitable.

Maybe he'll have better luck at home with the economic situation. At least appearance-wise.

But this is exactly as it should be. It would be far too exciting to be catapulted into paradise. And there's always a snake anyway.

So onward I go!

Here is the really interesting part. The "progressives" screamed hysterically about corporatist control and all of that for years but then one of the biggest war hawk corporate loving cluster bomb children killing people of all gets possibly installed as the head of the State Department and the progressives all ooh and aah about how wonderful it is. What planet am I on?

People are absolutely psychotic just as I always knew.

Back to my potatoes.

In a saucepot, steam or saute your sliced or cubed spuds until soft, then drop in a can of your basic cheapass cream of celery soup, and a can of your basic cheapass tuna in water. Season to taste, stretch with milk, and you've got days of delicious cheapass seafood chowder.

Other spud recipes out there?

PS - I love to eat little red potatoes raw, scrubbed with cold water. I understand from reading in "Prevention" magazine that cold spuds actually raise metabolism & burn fat.

PPS -- maybe we can be more charitable towards these bland politicos by thinking of them as the potatoes of politics: bland but versatile, ubiquitous and necessary for the cold winter months.

Wow JM, this really sounds like you've lost all hope. He's not even in office yet, do you really think it's that bad? Please elaborate.

HA HA HA HA HA!!!!

Cheapass will get you there! What a great chef you are, yesh.

Hey! That's for me!

More charitable is a good idea. Poor things. Anyway, I have to be logical. I know the prez is trying to keep the cheapass jackasses close to him and under control and he just might do it. They're all such fools. It'll take him a minute to get it right but he probably will. They're trying to keep that pest Clinton out of the Senate where she's likely to be more trouble. So placating her making her think she's a big deal just might work. We need to call in Orkin again. And I'm not paying them until they get it done!

No I haven't lost hope. I still love him. I'm just mad at him right now. A little spat. For foisting the hideous Clintons on me. I'm really really really down on my luck! I can tolerate a lot but the Clinton's I really can't hack, although I've been trying. Honest.

But it's not a done deal yet. And I realize she has to be dealt with.

As far as foreign policy goes, he can't change the global structure. I just would like a studious, dignified, serious, unobtrusive statesperson to be my Secretary of State. I like that position and I'm really against this contamination with the vaudeville queen. Kissinger's happy though. And I really do detest the war profiteers but there's not much anyone can do. It's the way of the world for now.

Obama is going to be great. Worry not.

Maybe that's it, then. It's not going to be the Clinton-esque types changing anything, so it has to be us.

But when? That's my rhetorical question.

Maybe if we can work out standards for barter o fservices & goods in our personal networks, we'll be way ahead of the powers-that-used-to-be.

The Clinton business is a huge, huge disappointment. Personally, the first exact Saturn/Uranus opposition was hellish but I'm now officially looking forward to the next.

I wonder though, could he have done anything else. I mean the Clintons OWN the democratic party and Obama is a democrat not an independent.
If he really intends change to the status quo, he first of all has to change the inner workings of political arena in the country. I mean, all he's done so far is prepared the public for it and created a groundswell of support. Actual transformation never happens overnight and pluto will be in capricorn seeing to it for the next 15 years.

I say, wait and see what this man has planned. I bet noone either in the blogosphere or in the higher echelons of power will be able to predict his future moves.

And yeshe, that's exactly what I am involved in locally. Farmer's markets are a good example. People who share my views on food are cutting out the middlemen and making it possible for farmers to sell directly to the consumer. Kind of like a year-round, indoor farmer's market.

Yeah!
You're right about the change from us and he had that in mind with the massive organization he built. I think he's doing exactly the right thing by putting these people to work and controlling them You can imagine the trouble they'd cause if marginalized. That's his MO -- not to marginalize, but to draw them to the table and make them desire the change. There has to be something in it for them too. By consolidating this way he has a better chance of getting his government up and running. But it will come with struggle and frustration.

He hasn't changed in his opposition to the system but his destiny with Saturn in Cap is to work within it so we have to be patient. The Clintonistas won't be running the show although the war machine will continue somewhere. It's not going to disappear overnight. So he has to keep them from freaking and murdering him at the same time slowly increase the people's power as Uranus comes in.

Anon's right ...

And chris is right, the series of Saturn-Uranus oppositions has just begun. The power struggles within the establishment will bring the current structure down in increments.

The underground network is already getting to work and Obama can bypass the media and communicate well now. It's all part of a grand plan. The Clintons aren't healthy and I don't think they'll be a problem. She's probably more stripped of her so called power this way. I never thought she had any myself. So she can play act this way and stay out of his graying hair. She's going to be trouble emotionally though, probably, but he has his Pluto opposition to Venus for while. She's such an agonized whiner. I really can't hack it so I'll be tuning it out.

I've had enough myself after 16 years. People are scared and want solutions not more soap opera agony. They'll learn. It's up to the people to get busy and walk away from the nonsense. I say just take the damn job, shut the F up, and get to work like everybody else.

I think he's off to great start. He's confounded everyone. The more slowly and methodically the transformation comes the better. It happens where least expected when people are pre-occupied. Like down here on the earth where iguanas live.

Actually, shut the F up and disappear. Do not take the job. You'll be doing an act of kindness to yourself, M'Lady. It's not for you.

I willed Obama into the presidency by refusing to entertain the idea of a McCain administration. I hereby officially do the same thing and will us a great SOS by not even considering the thought of Hillary Clinton in that position. What a ludicrous idea. Who even thought of it?

Do you hear me out there? Cosmos? We've been good.

I don't get SOS vibe off HRC, either. Never did. Never took it as a given when the rumors started flying.

But it IS a way to make her feel "noticed." give her the limelight for a while.

Reflecting on what he had to deal with on the S Side of Chicago, these are the same ego-boo moves he had to make with street-corner divas who could really eff up a meeting.

I'm with you, jm - Somebody Terrific for SOS!

Yesh, I didn't take it seriously when the rumors came out. I thought they must be joking. Then the world bought it and I began to wonder. That was the worst part after all we've been through. More of the same?? people??? My god. Al Giordano's been doing a series on the subject and he has a vested interest, being a reporter from Latin America. The article on her dealings there is awful to absorb. He does get emotional, though.

I also felt like you did that it was designed to give her a moment while the real work could go on unobstructed. She was absolutely dying for the spot after being out for a minute. Boy howdy did she swoop. I cannot believe that the public wants more of this circus right now. Maybe it's offering distraction and relief from the harsh realities coming in.

But it IS a way to make her feel "noticed." give her the limelight for a while.

Exactly why do we have to baby-sit her?

Reflecting on what he had to deal with on the S Side of Chicago, these are the same ego-boo moves he had to make with street-corner divas who could really eff up a meeting.

Heheh. You're in the know, being from that neck. I'm going to put energy into a good SOS. Enough.

True. The people who got us into this mess, like Rubin and Summers, among others, are the same ones who are going to be influential in the Obama administration. Though I did catch some good news tonight. I was glad to hear one name that has been suggested as a member of Obama's economic team "Jason Furman, though suggested by Rubin for his campaign post of economic policy director, actually spent more of his career working for Joseph Stiglitz than for Robert Rubin," and "Peter Orszag has done a fine job as director of the Congressional Budget Office, and is not averse to large scale public spending."

Large scale public spending is what FDR did and seems to be what's called for now.

Yes, if you like swiss chard. Spinach works too.

Slice two or three medium potatoes horizontally about 1/8" thick. Saute on both sides until golden. A no stick pan works best. Add one large clove or more finely chopped garlic and chopped swiss chard. I usually put in one large leaf or two smaller ones. Remove the center rib part. Mix potatoes and chard together gently with a spoon. Add about 1/4 cup water or broth. Cover and simmer about 10 minutes or until the potatoes are soft and the liquid evaporates. Turn off the stove. Add salt, sprinkle with cajun "blackened" seasoning and mix carefully.

yeshe, I've been thinking about barter recently. I think there's going to be a lot of it going on in the next few years.

With a Saturn, Uranus, and Pluto alignment, none of us, including the D.C. beltway establishment who think they're in control and think they're going to be able to keep up the same shtick, are going to be in for a rude awakening. These are the heavyweights.

I'm going to forget about it tonight and go watch the story about the climbers on Everest (Frontline).

Blogger jm said...

Ha ha! I keep trying to forget about it hourly and I'm beginning to think I'll have to go to Everest personally to achieve that!

The potato recipe sounds great and it gave me an idea. Scalloped potatoes!!! Out of the 99 cent bag.

I also agree that barter is coming back. I read an article in my paper about how frugal and inventive people were quickly becoming. Humans are plastic and adjust quickly. I think Obama is going to do well and along with our resilience we should be all right, although I agree that the planets show quite a whammy. The rich could be the ones most affected.

I'm okay with his picks at this point. It's a huge organization and he's getting it together in record time in order to get to work immediately. People will come and go. There are some good ones he's appointing, too, considering there are about 1000 slots to fill. I read that Summers has changed from the deregulation days. There will be a consensus of opinion so the not so good ones won't dominate. They know better than to revert to the practices that got us here, anyway. Maybe some are looking for a chance to redeem themselves.
