Celebration of Labor

In Grapes of Wrath, the great writer, John Steinbeck, depicted the plight of American migrant workers in the west during the Depression. The novel details the nearly hopeless situation of the downtrodden farmer in those years, and emphasizes cooperative solutions to the social problems brought about by industrialization. In response to the exploitation of laborers, the workers began to join trade unions. The rich history of the organized labor movement in this country is full of drama...violence, tragedy, dedication, courage, joy, sorrow, failure, and success.

The observance of Labor Day as a national holiday began over
100 years ago under the Presidency of Grover Cleveland.

Online NewsHour: Origins of Labor Day -- September 2, 1996 PBS

It's interesting that our entrance into life is also classified as labor. The word originally implied toil and stress, and this seems to be different from the concept of work. But no doubt, the exploitation of working men by industries has been historical fact, and one wonders if there can ever be an equitable relationship between this vital work force and its employers.

Today in my local newspaper an interesting article appeared. A Harris Interactive survey called Working in America:what employees want states that soon workers might indeed get everything they want as a potential labor shortage turns the financial tables on employers.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the domestic labor force will be 10 million bodies short by 2010 as the baby boomers retire. This is noteworthy, as it coincides with the astrological alignment, Uranus in Aries square Pluto in Capricorn, indicating changes ahead in government and business.
In this mass exodus from the workplace, companies will have to be more generous, including restoring medical benefits, so the study shows.

This evening as I flipped to my local radio station, another interesting factor came up in discussion......robots. They are on the way and the effect on our labor force is a wild and woolly mystery at this point, but I suspect it will be great. Whatever the future holds I know that the life of abundance I enjoy in this country, with all the goods and services I desire so readily available, I attribute to the working man of the world.

And there is a rich musical heritage that evolved from the unionization of workers too. Good article, jm. I have enjoyed watched the evolution of your posts too!

If you don't mind, I'm going off topic here to post a note I hope Joe finds . . . Uranus conjuncting nMars can be a jolt by itself & this is compounded by the Full Moon/eclipse!

JOE!!!! Transit alert for your S/O!!! That Full Moon/lunar eclipse will be right on his Mars in Pisces op Jupiter in Virgo!!! This is an especially powerful alignment as it includes Uranus in Pisces . . . as a matter of fact, there may be some effects coming through already!

Neith.
Writing this stream of consciousness has been opening forgotten doors and leading me back to myself. I am in a moment of great self discovery and evolution. Of course, a Pluto transit is involved. What respect I have for this entity. What a giver he is.

After the last years of consuming other people's ideas this is a joyous moment. It was excruciating to take these things in knowing they weren't my thoughts and feelings and creating a resistant sensation in my body, often pain. But maybe it helped strengthen my immune system. It was something I had to finish, before the journey back to self, especially since I can no longer do this in isolation. I have to share my perceptions now and I also have to stick with the right people. So that when I take in their selves, it not only doesn't hurt, but takes me to discovery of another layer of myself and the feeling that I'm in the right place.

I came to a crossroads and realized that the choice was mine. I can have a fulfilling life with contribution to the whole, or not. The bridge to the collective was missing before, but this wild invention has provided just the connection I was seeking. And now with Neptune in Aquarius in my 11th, there are no holds.

What's interesting about Pluto in Capricorn and these statistics is the sudden drop in the aged work force. And the new frontier of the young, indicated by Uranus in Aries.

I've been talking to lot of young people lately and they have some very interesting things to say. They grew up in this new computer age and they are different. They have the new skills that will be required in the new work arena, and an intense interest in the history of the Hippie movement, as they pursue alternative lifestyles. They aren't following the dropout procedure so this is why I think they fit in with Pluto in Capricorn. They will be discovering how to bring innovation within the structure more than some past movements. Violent revolution is not at all what they have in mind. They don't seem that angry, just anxious to get going and have influence. Uranus in Aries will enhance the influence of the young, and I think they already sense this.

I also think that we are seeing the transition out of the Industrial Revolution, so the grab from the military/industrial complex is at it's zenith as they try to get all they can before the fall. The alternative industries are waiting to go.

This item appeared in the paper also that day:

Metropolitan State College is among the first in the country to offer a bachelor's of science degree that combines hard science with holistic medicine.
It is called Integrative Therapeutic Practices, which includes courses in anatomy and physiology as well as the East Indian practive of Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine.
The new 4 year degree is a result of public demand for holistic healing, including herbal remedies, therapeutic touch and Reiki. Electives include yoga and Tai Chi.

Several signs point to American's growing trust in holistic medicine. Insurance companies are beginning to reimburse for holistic therapies.

I think when Saturn goes into Virgo next there will be a further spurt of growth as The Uranus in Aries gets ready to bring the big changes.

Colorado is a bellweather state indicating future trends for the country. It also has gone democratic after 60 years and it looks like a Democratic governor is on deck too.

The west is associated with pioneering so maybe when Uranus gets to Aries, a lot of the environmental innovation will emerge from there.

They're smarter than we were . . . firm believers in indoor plumbing!! We had many good notions though & the holistic approach to healing you bring up in a later comment, is really going into high gear . . . I know what I want for a healer in my later years!! Don't you?! :-) And in some respects we do reflect our generation.

Yes ma'am. I know what kind of healers I want.

The Pluto in Virgo generation is on deck and we will see some interesting changes. This goes with our discussion of Ceres at Pisces Chronicles.

After Uranus leaves Aries it will go into Taurus and trine the Capricorn for some ease of motion on the earth plane. And new discoveries put into action.

Tseka, what a beautiful thing to say. These goose bumps are become an everday occurrence.

We are soon going to need a cave to store our jewels in.

Really? i've been thinking we've been unwrapping the "songs" that have been kept for us in copperlined boxes and in the "secret house" of Hel which is "underground". The time is now right to bring them to surface.

Oh the copper lined boxes!
Of course! The copper box is going into a near future song of mine, speaking of songs.

Hel's secret house is a beautiful image. She was an expansive entity it seems. Covered a lot of ground.

Thank you, tseka, for the copper box.

Maybe what we do is put something in the cave/house/box at the same time we retrieve and bring to the surface. So it always stays full.

How synchronistic. Lisa Dale Miller's full Moon in Pisces article talks about releasing attachments. I came home from getting away from it all and found that some kind of trojan virus got into my computer and wiped the My Documents folder clean. All the web essays and articles on the deterioration of the country that I had been collecting since 9/11, along with assorted web-flotsam, are totally gone. A hint to move on? Probably!
