Ladies and Gentlemen.....
A Miraculous, Magnificent, Stupendous, Once in a lifetime thrill ....The Nodes of the Moon!

I was up with the big bad moon
That 'ol sun came up too soon,
He said, "Get down, get down, get down, you lazy moon"....
There's no room up here, for me and you.

The battle is on between the sun and the moon,
The battle is on between me and you
I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind, 'cause I won't lose
You're gonna share that sky, that's what you're gonna do.

Divorce...A story from Tago, West Africa

Sun and moon married and had many, many children. You could count them all if it were possible to count all the stars. But Sun and Moon could not agree on anything; what to call the children, how to bring them up, which crops to grow, or where to sleep, how many pails of rain to spill on the Earth below, or where to go swimming in the evening sea.
So Sun and Moon parted, he to live at one end of the sky, she to live at the other, and now they do the best to avoid each other.

This is the age-old story. The battle between Sun-centered and Moon-centered religions, mythologies, and systems of belief. Western astrology, of course, uses the Sun as the dominant element in the person, but my experience has led me to view the Moon as equal in importance. As the Sun circles in the sky, the orbiting moon crosses this path in two places. These are the nodes of the Moon, and I believe, the answer to this age-old puzzle. Where these paths cross is the integration of our disparate selves. This one opposition exists in every chart, and is the clearest place of decision making I've found.
The South Node represents all that we have mastered and are ready to leave behind. Job done. Some astrologers believe that it reaches back to past lifetimes and contains the soul memory of many lessons already learned about this function in the personality.
The North Node contains all the lessons of the person's future, and is a guide to personal fulfillment in the current lifetime. I've studied these nodes for many years and have found them to be the most accurate indicator of the problems in a person's life. The big puzzle. The paradox. The clue to destiny.

Some say that we can integrate the two nodes and live a good life. Some say we must choose one or the other. I am of the opinion that we have to learn to relinquish the grip on the South Node. It is the most addictive spot in the psyche, and where we go whenever we are insecure, because it is so deeply familiar. Most people want to drag this node with them as they merrily go to the North for happiness, but I haven't seen it work this way. The reason I think we need to leave this point is because it requires no effort whatsoever to effect this behavior. It's entirely automatic. Habitual. It needs no more cultivation. No more energy. It will continue to act without our effort.

Until we can disengage from this habitual behavior, I think it is almost impossible to reach the full potential written in our charts. It IS virtually impossible to get there, as strong as the lure to the safe and familiar is. But the end is always disappointing at the South Node. There is no growth. Nothing new. An empty safety that isolates and shortchanges. Satisfaction is missing. So the South often dominates and keeps us in the ancient self that wants to move ahead to the unknown.
In a sense, I think the North promises another birth. The inability to see what's ahead is the fear.

Invariably, the South Node indicates the family patterns that the person has inherited, even to the point of being recognized personally. The North can also be represented by family members but less attention is paid as the struggles with the South take precedence in these early stages. Fortunately, I think the positive attributes enter by osmosis and fill the bank for later use.
It's easy. Wherever the South Node is.....don't do it. But, of course, life is never really that simple. Depending on other factors, the difficulty of actually breaking the habit varies from person to person, although I see struggle in every case.
As we go through each node, you will see this, plus get a good glimpse of the orchestration of the horoscope in general, as we look at chart examples. I'll start with the South Node and then synthesize it with the North.

South Node in Aries first!

Aren't we all???

Juju. The node looks like a horseshoe with a little circle on each end. the North is right side up, the South upside down.

Jane! This is great! If you want me to post your chart for analysis, give a holler.

This is an adventure, and I have no idea at all how it will unfold. But of course, with my Mars/Neptune I never know where anything is going.

All's I know is that I have a lot to learn, and that this will be a pleasure for my NN in Taurus. Hope you don't mind my turtle pace. That means more time in your charts.:-)

Yay! I'm ready!

One question, jm. You wrote: So the South often dominates and keeps us in the ancient self that wants to move ahead to the unknown.

Do you mean, perhaps, "keeps us FROM the ancient self..."?

Great question joe. I think that alone deserves some discussion, even before we move ahead.

I think the very end could be a return to something ancient, but I'm not a great romanticizer of the past. This is long and involved.

All that came before us might be basically equal to where we are with the good and bad characteristics. We weren't there in those times and history is mostly fiction.

The Mayans for example are though to be advanced wonderful people, but according to the studies, they were one of the most barbaric cultures ever known. Addicted to alcohol in a way you can't even imagine. I can barely repeat their practices they are so horrifying.
The Incas were better.

Interestingly, you have a SN in Cancer, which is clinging to the past, so there could be a romanticizing to justify this. Then again, maybe there are ancient secrets we have forgotten that need remembering.

In terms of the nodes in the chart, I don't think the past needs remembering consciously. It comes with into the incarnation and functions throughout the life without any energy input. we have to see if the future takes us back to the ancient past, but first we have to go there before we know.

Then, of course, I'm an Aries rising with a 1st house NN so I want to forge ahead.

Any thoughts, anyone?

JM, I'd be delighted to have you (and everyone else) take a crack at my chart! Thank you! :-)

How can I email my birth data to you? (I'd rather not have the raw data itself posted publicly.)

I looked around and couldn't find an email link...

I've been putting off posting my e-mail for fear I'd never ever ever get away from the computer. I do love the E-mail rap.

Multifaceted is right. One of my favorite words.

For me, I am no longer interested in the current parade of public figures, charts included. I'd rather get to know you.

YAY, finally got a break in my work so that I could come read your introductory article on the stupendous Nodes. The Sun-Moon interplay is a good point. And that leads to another thing about Nodes, with is their usefulness in relationships.

In your experience, JM, what is the value in comparing the synastry between the Nodes in two people's charts? I haven't seen anything on it.

Pat!!!! Oh how wonderful! A true node lover!

Pat, I think the node synastry between the charts is maybe the most important thing of all in determining relationship dynamics. They are highly useful. I'll go into it. Very very interesting. Very.

If people have planets of their own conjunct the South it is extremely difficult. One great antidote is relationships that conjunct the North.

And invariably, people will back away from others with heavy North attributes or contacts for fear of giving up the addiction. It is amazing to see the consistency of all of this. How we cling to our discomfort.

If you get in one with planets on the South, trouble is ahead. It might take a minute, but it will come. The thing is, is sometimes that lesson is necessary. But seeing it helps prepare. I do it ALL the time.

And not to worry. Jane already contacted me. She has a South in Aries after all!!!

Ha, Ha, Ha! And here you thought you could step away from the demands of the North Node!! With my NN in Gemini, the Internet has been a godsend . . . lots & lots of information available almost instantly & the ability to disseminate that information quickly!

An observation: Lutin noted & I second, that planets that conjoin our Nodes give us clues as to what's going on with us now.

As to relationships, I'd say conjunctions to the Nodes are most important & the more exact, the more powerful. Interestingly, My Aries & I have no Nodal contacts between our charts . . . and it's been one of the more peaceful relationships I've been a part of. We've been together almost seventeen years now.
Is it possible I had paid my dues before entering this relationship?! I'd say, yes because it frees me up to devote time & energy to others . . .

The Cancer/Cap nodes are really fascinating but you impatient Aries will have to wait till I get there!
Suffice it to say that worldly achievement comes late, or comes early and goes, and with effort, but I'll go through the whole thing soon.

Jane. LOL! I hate to use the word addiction for the South Node, but actually, that's pretty much what it is. If you re-read the post, I did mention the habitual behavior of the South. Something we want to be released from.

In your case, you, yourself, have planets on the North, which is excellent. Very soon on this. It will be great for me so I can see how much of a pull the addictive South is despite these conjunctions.

Sige is a good example because she has planets on the South. We'll do the chart.

With my NN in Gemini, the Internet has been a godsend . . .

Wonderful, isn't it?

This is gonna be fun! I'm looking forward to getting new insights into myself! I'm always amazed at what other people see in my chart that I had not seen myself. And being rather on the green side, that's usually a whole lot!

I'm here to learn! And seem to have found a great bunch of people to learn with! :-)

Jane, this is the greatest bunch on earth!

You lucked out. I'm looking forward to looking at your transits and seeing why this is happening now. One thing for us is that I have the opposite nodes...North in the 1st, and this is always a major connection.

One thing about South in Aries is impatience! And I'm turtle. A great believer in taking a lot of time and savoring experience. NN in Taurus. So bite the bullet!!

It's a comin!!! :-)

I'm looking forward to getting new insights into myself

This is one of life's greatests. I love being around people who value it.

BTW, this is a perfect illustration of our opposite nodes. This is so funny Jane. How these things materialize, often in a flash.

You have the "my way" Aries, and I have the "your way 7th". You are supposed to see the value of others the way they are, and I'm supposed to forget who everyone else is and what they want, and do it my way or else! The hardest thing in the world for me, the greatest people pleaser known to man.

So my pace it is!!!!!! Might as well REALLY get started!

You know what the funny thing is? I never considered I ~had~ 'any Aries' because I have no planets in Aries, only that SN, and it doesn't print out on the astro.com charts, so I tend to forget that it is there. Also, because of the way I think about my SN, which I'll save for later...

I do have that Mars/Merc conjunction in my core stellium (with my NN and Sun) that I think is responsible for my motor mouth... ;-P

12/2/07 5:08 PM
Blogger jm said...

This is so valuable. Just proves the power of the South. Even with the stellium on the North. Your youthfulness is also this node.

Speaking of motormouths... I have a Merc/Mars square. We're in business or in trouble. You pick!!!

BTW, this turtle hasn't looked at your whole chart yet, but I did notice your Libra stellium exactly on my Mars/Neptune conjunction. The NN especially on my 0 degree Mars. I better start taking catnaps when I can!

Last night I tried to wiggle out of everything, but it just isn't meant to be. Even with Pluto on my Uranus now. Especially with Pluto there.

Oh well, freedom is relative. And within.

ARE YOU KIDDING!!!!! The story of my life. All distraction.

Mercury square Neptune. Where did that last thought go?????????

I'm going to draw a map of Mars going forward, then Mars with Neptune trying to go forward and you'll see exactly what I mean.

I live for distraction!

But the node is coming. It's written believe it or not. Faster than the Roadrunner! Speedier than a bullet. I do have Aries rising after all.

I think I scared myself. Not sure how much 'getting naked in public' I'm gonna be wanting to do here! Yikes!

I may also need to run on and on and on (yes, so what else is new! ;-) ) and/or take my time thinking about all this SN/NN stuff...

...so I opened up my own 'shop'.

I had opened that Blogger acct back in December but never used it. Methinks the time may have come...

Interesting thing to think about. I think you can be in charge of the personal revelation. The Moon in Cancer likes to share intimacies, but also likes a certain amount of privacy. The SN Aries doesn't want to look bad, but that's the way the cookie crumbles! We're all BADDE!

So far I haven't seen any deep dark ugly inner occurrences probed by anyone around here. I think we get enough of that from our celebrities.

12/2/07 9:46 PM
Blogger Jane said...

Actually, the real issue is not so much my own 'getting naked' per se. My main issue is that I am a known quantity in astro circles and some of what I would need to share is recognizable. This leads to a twofold issue: exposure of myself, which in turn leads to exposure of anybody else I talk about in the process (or at any point in the future), even if pseudonymed.

I have people who follow me around to read my comments. That means I always need to be mindful of where I draw various lines. (As I said, more out of respect for the various third-parties in my life than for myself.)

Excellent advice for everyone.

This vast public forum is a new and exciting adventure for so many of us and we have to learn as we go through experimentation. We are becoming a big community and people really are easily recognizable. But you know who minds what. And we'll learn to share ourselves and keep dignity intact.

Speaking of dignity, one biggie is your Saturn in Capricorn, at the interesting 0 degree. Just starting on the road to real self control and doing what's right. Of course it squares all your Libra and your people. so consider this a great exercise.

I'm not one for gossip or sordid anything. Just sincere self study and fine relationships. We can do it!

Notice that I have a Pluto transit bearing down on said Saturn and squaring my 4-part Libra stellium (which includes my NN, for others who will be reading this)? :-) !!

That would be the same Pluto that is transiting (by oppo) your Uranus.

Notice that my Saturn (being transited) sits in the 11th house (natural ruler = Uranus)? And that I have Uranus rising/chart ruler?

This Pluto/Uranus theme being only one of ?? I have noticed between our charts. :-)

There is a reason you and I have been 'brought together' at this point in time. I'm looking forward to seeing it unfold/revealed. :-)

12/2/07 10:49 PM

Oh it will be great fun and enlightening!

The Pluto transit is the biggie. I was just about to post on that. It's as good as here.

But the turtle has to run your chart. I will immediately. I promise!!

This Libra getting bounced soon will be something. I'm just coming from five solid years of Pluto on my Sag planets and this is the climax.
Saturn will also be in Virgo and changes are afoot. Serious useful what-not.

You're right and very interesting about the Pluto/Uranus. This is going to be a major event for you.

I have things to tell you about this Pluto/Uranus for me. It's been one of those Uranian surprise packages. But I have 1000 major Uranus aspects in my chart. And it's at the pivotal bottom point of my kite formation.
